From apps like this to radar detectors, I cant believe its legal to release products designed to circumvent laws, resulting in preventable deaths.

If you think it should be legal to speed, or to drive drunk, that change THAT law, dont make it legal to circumvent the existing law. It makes no sense.

...and you think most people who buy a MBP won't swap out the drive for a 7200RPM drive or an SSD and max out their memory?

    Intelligent...no genius level thinking!

;) Its all about the OWC Dual drive Pro

I had an app rejected because the icon was a cartoon of the presidential seal where the eagle, in one claw, was holding an iphone-looking phone, which I drew myself, and which was probably 12 pixels x 6 pixels or so in size (in an overall icon that was 57px x 57px.)

But apparently including a 3/4 scale photo of an iphone is fine.

    Whatever.

    1) Thanks for reminding me, i forgot that fact.
    2) But you'll happily have a RAID array and plug THAT into your iBook?
    3) Yeah you said, a RAID array... a sort of external HD, but in an array.
    4) If you take your iBook on the road with you, then how are the other people in your house going to access the movies and other media via iTV if its stored on your "RAID array" which requires a host computer to be of any use?

You have high expectations for Apple then? Its going to be some RAID array!

Rather than a RAID, what they need is a foolproof NAS (Network-attached storage). A NAS is basically a special purpose computer that has a network port (wired/wireless) as well as internal/external storage through USB/SATA/eSATA. For example D-Link makes a NAS that is compatible with uPnP as well as Bonjour. This box has space for an internal hard drive (ATA) as well as USB2 for external HDs. It has 802.11g wireless as well as ethernet port. You just connect is as another network device in your home and then you can dump your media into it from your PC/Mac. So, for people with laptops, you can buy your media or RIP them into the NAS and then iTV can use it. This can work well for people with laptops. iTV should be able to work off of a NAS rather than a PC/Mac.

The current versions of NAS may not be foolproof (Apple quality standards) and therefore this is a companion product that Apple could produce for home media storage. Another advantage of the NAS is that it can be near where iTV is rather than the computer since the bandwidth requirements for iTV are more important than for the computer. You don't want glitches while playing back media. So, you could live with downloading the media from online into NAS directly (through a slower wireless connection). Then have the NAS connected through wired ethernet to iTV.

    Hope this makes sense!!

Apple can design better than that. It will probably not look like that. Why? Because they do not want it to look exactly as the Nano as it would confuse people. That design does not make sense to me.

I think and hope they will make a new Newton, more a Apple PDA than a iPod with phone capabilities.

It is time for Apple to release a phone, but not just an iPod Phone. Look at the patent Apple made some days ago, it looks more like a PDA/Smartphone than phone which is great.

The Nanos are the best selling mp3 player. They're beautiful and loved by all. Nobody is going to not buy a cell phone because it ''looks too much like a nano'', that will be the reason they DO buy the cell phone.

This makes no sense. Not everyone needs or desires an Airport Express. I never asked Apple for free hardware.

And not everybody needs the free WiFi router you got from your ISP.

Do they license Airplay technology to software developers? I don't think so.
Show me an app on the Mac App Store (or wherever) that acts like an Airport Express and i'll buy it at once.

As said 100 times already, Airfoil Speakers. Yes, you need the Airfoil app but to me that is close enough to acting like an Airport Express unless you want to stream music from your iPad to your iPhone.

What you should think about is: How hard is for a Mac to act like an Airport Express with the proper software? It shouldn't.
Why it there no software like this? Apple does not want to.

Again, what scenario cannot be solved with either the remote app, plugging in your or some guest's iOS device or iPod or connecting to guest's iTunes library via Home Sharing?
Let's see, a guest's iOS device or iPod would have to 'controlled' from your Mac and not from the device itself, ditto for a laptop (though the trial version of Airfoil should transmit a song or two without problems for free wirelessly from anybody's computer to your computer).

It could be no other thing.

It could be many other things--Aperture, iSight, Cinema Displays, updated laptops, etc.
What it won't be is an iPhone.

I would love to have a red iPod, but I don't know why we would ever give money to help fight AIDS on a continent where the people take NO precautions to prevent themselves from getting AIDS... I mean, sure many children are born with it in Africa, but for soooo many adults, they could prevent the spread if they would just be monogamous.

So there, I solved AIDS for free, no Oprah, no Bono, no Ipods. Just have sex only within a lifetime committed relationship and AIDS is all but gone in one generation!

I'll stick to my black aluminum iPod nano, anyhow. I just hope 10% of the proceeds didn't go to research finding cures for the black plague... or frostbite...

This is total BS. We should have been informed of this and a way to turn it off or delete the file on our own. As for the poster above who stated it only goes to your computer, I highly doubt it. This is another big brother tracking honest citizens. Hope a class action does happen. I will definitely sign on!

How does streaming music to my iPhone help me, when O2 cap my Internet usage, and then charge when you use more.

Perhaps if they let you cache songs.

This is a great start for Apple and should help sway studios that are still on the fence. Doesnt mean I'm biting though, only thing that'll get me to seriously think of buying a movie would be nothing less than a 720 x 480 reso. I might get impulsive if there are more offerings. Maybe.

I think Apple should seriously consider offering rentals too. Its dumb not to try it out :)

Interesting to see Apple's move. Traditionally with PowerPC the upgrades are more serene and not as volatile and frequent as the intels.

As a lot of Apple users are "trendy, cool consumers", they might get pissed off at these "more frequent updates" that makes their "cool investments" absolete faster.

What sort of criminal brings a gun to a robbery? The sort of criminal that is willing to utilize their gun to get away at all costs. Human life is not sacred to criminals that carry guns; whether it's their own lives or the lives of innocent people; or the lives of law enforcement or the lives of security guards...

This was NEVER your run of the mill "smash & grab" but a premeditated crime w/guns...

Apple is due with something cool; something to compete with PS3 dollars this Xmas.

Compete, eh? The device everybody is clamouring for is exactly like a PS3, and a PS3 can run iTunes and has a hard drive. And the President of Sony was on stage with Jobs recently. And Sony has a movie studio.

    Nah, couldn't be.

Apple distanced itself from the Macworld New York Expo, I wonder if they are doing the same thing with the Paris expo?

Plus the French are gunning for Apple ['s FairPlay]. Jobs doesn't strike me as the "thank you sir, may I have another?" type.

Same imac with more disk space, faster processor, 23'' screen, better wireless, maybe a second disk drive, and the same price as the old 20 Incher.

A second disk drive? Cripes, I'd have to buy one.

He who isn't RAID mirroring will lose hair to data loss.

Or you could use that Time Machine thing (which is still really weird about needing a second drive).

Similar, but not the same. The new design came out in October 2009.

New sizes, new aspect ratio, removal of plastic from the enclosure, removed the outer aluminum bezel, etc. And new guts, of course.

Yes you are correct. After a little digging is was a considerable upgrade. Even though the look stayed close. I almost wish mine would take a bomb so I would upgrade.

You should have a unique identifier (password) attached to authentication mechanism (UAC in Windows). So, Windows users should run as standard users. But, using a standard account in Windows causes issues with some software, such as some online games, that require admin accounts (or "run as administrator"; superuser) to function.

Maybe theoretically you should do that, but I don't know anyone that actually does on Windows or OS X. In both cases you aren't actually running with your full powers all the time, and get prompted to escalate if something needs admin access.

Many online games on Windows 7 still require running as Administrator (superuser privileges) to function. This requires setting the "Properties" to allow "run as Administrator" or turning off UAC. This is risky as the games connect to remote servers and download content. Trojans are installed without authentication if accessed with superuser privileges. This example, using online games, shows the problem with how software is being written for Windows.

Commercial software shouldn't be installing malware...I mean tons of it now has all kinds of DRM that is arguably malware, but...

While I'd rather run something without giving it full access to the system, ultimately you're trusting the publisher either way.

The issue with online games found in Windows is not problematic on Mac OS X given that software for Mac is written following the guidelines of the principle of least privilege (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Principle_of_least_privilege) more so than Windows software.

Be that as it may, that's not a problem with the OS. If games are prompting for admin access though, my guess is it's because they're installing DRM, which on either OS is going to demand mucking about in the system.

I'm opposed to most forms of DRM for a variety of reasons (and also opposed to thieves), but this has nothing to do with Windows.

Mac OS X is much better insulated from Malware.

    Why?

Vulnerabilities in those components in Mac OS X are attributed as OS X vulnerabilities because OS X includes them by default so this artificially inflates the number of vulnerabilities in OS X when looking at vulnerability comparisons.

I really doubt they double count things like that, given they're counted separately. I suppose there might be some validity to it if they did.

These components have worse security in Windows. How these vulnerabilities manifest in Windows is through Internet Explorer.

If they don't announce/release new MacBooks, my plans are severely screwed.

Aside from that, I have 200 to blow on some gadget or other. I wonder if Apple can give me a reason to give it to them rather than to Nintendo for a Wii.

    Aperture update - definite
    MacBook Pro C2D - likely
    iPod photo accessory - maybe
    Cinema displays - not likely
    iPhone - no way

Does anyone else think something more might be coming? With the price drop of both models and the lack of drastic changes ie the rumored full screen, bluetooth, and virtual click wheel?
Could there be a "one more thing..." next week?
